Bad Situation....

2,585 710 May 14, 2013 at 12:28 PM in Chat
So I went to a car dealership to look at a Mitsubishi Eclipse I'm interested in. I took it for a test drive and was convinced to put down a deposit for the price they were giving it to me for. I asked if I could get a refund if it falls through (they don't offer financing, full cash only). They said yes and go back and forth telling me "congrats on your car!". "I'm like dafuq?" I signed a purchase contract that stated a deposit is non-refundable yet the dealer told me I could if worse comes to worse. Even the manager came up to me and said if need be, we can refund it. Bad situation. Am I SOL? Sadwalk

Well shit, why didn't you mention you had his business card at first.

That changes everything!
Doesn't really matter.

I'd probably say the high cost of insurance on a sports car makes the car unaffordable.

Also whenever a dealer asks for a deposit and just won't deal without one, write on the check, "For fully refundable deposit."

I doubt insurance would be that bad.

You signed the contract saying that the deposit was non refundable. You are up a creek without a paddle. If you were able to get them to claim that the deposit was refundable, you should have gotten them to edit the paperwork before you signed it. Unfortunately, now it's your word against theirs, and the paperwork is on their side.

Same thing happen to my parent back in 1998. Even though they signed the paper (to lock in the price), they were able to get the full amount back ($500) . Just get ready to argue for a long time laugh out loud

The reason they pulled out of the deal because the police founded our minivan after 2 months laugh out loud .

I'm glad the police founded it. One time, I founded a $5 bill, but my wife always foundeds my keys.

The manager even came over to say that it was refundable. Now why would he want to risk his reputation over that? It's a deal over money, the funds at which I don't have, that was part of the agreement. I had to sell my car to get the funds to make the deal happen. Didn't sell it, no money.

I'm trying not to be mean. We were all young and stupid at one point. Some of us even outgrew it.

Risk his reputation? I thought all car salesmen and car lots had bad reputations anyway. Smilie

They want money. You give them money.

So anyway, how old are you, OP? You really do sound naive, but you are buying your own car... I don't know... I'll go with 18 (but I want to guess younger than that).
