What is your deal-hunting origin story?

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

In comic book terminology, an origin story is an account or back-story revealing how a character or team gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes or supervillains.
What is your origin story? Sure, we may not have superpowers or are superheroes or supervillains, but what many of us do here is pretty super.

Were there events in your childhood that led you to your life of deal-hunting? Did you perhaps come from certain circumstances that changed you into a person who hates retail prices? Or perhaps this is all a new development and you're just doing it for fun, or out of necessity. (Oh, you may also be a person who does deal-hunting on the side and is mainly in these forums for The Lounge.)

Why didn't I think of switching price tags as a kid? Doh

Oh yeah, I wasn't given money when I was little. Kept me out of trouble I guess. laugh out loud

My origin story? There I was, looking at breasts on another website when an owner of an excellent pair kept telling me about this site. While I finally looked away, here I was.

/truestory

I want to know more about this "owner". Scratchchin

Shoplifting was the gateway drug...but my guilty conscience wouldn't let me just pilfer and depart, I always made sure to buy some small paltry bauble as penance, cheap but not free...that led to the aforementioned price tag switching before UPC scanning was all the rage...thankfully the Internet allowed me to turn my predilections toward a more positive end and I found first Pricewatch, then Slickdeals...

Jeez a "slick deal" is not fraud like swapping price tags or direct shoplifting! I recognize that much of this was done when you all younger though..............

However, there's a lot of debate about the ethical grey area in between like extreme couponing and price mistakes...

One persons SD can very well be another's fraud or abuse...

Coupons and PM's fine, but if you're taking the price off one item and transferring it to another that's clearly fraud. The incidence of that is reduce nowadays due to UPC usage though.

"One would be hard pressed to find an area of the country where there is not a fully defined law against tag switching, but finding an area that will fully prosecute people guilty of this crime is even harder."

Wasn't defending the one end of the spectrum simply pointing out that there is a sliding scale
Hence:
"the ethical grey area in between"

You might think PM's and "abusing" coupon stacking is fine, there are others that define it as fraud.

Chances are if you have to ask several different CSRs or go to a particular store or wait for a particular manager to be on duty to get a deal it's pushing into what some consider unethical and/or fraud...
