Discount Tire Direct Price Match Saved $200 on New Tires YMMV

I've been trying to find a good deal on some tires for the old Man Van, my Excursion with a 1/4 million miles. Of course didn't want to spend too much money since the old girl is nearing the end of her life. After tons of price matching, shopping, research, and negotiation my overall cheapness prevailed. $640 for a set Cooper Discovery ATP Load Range E tires is an awesome deal out the door.

I was just shopping for tires at Discount Tire Direct's eBay store [ebay.com] and went to price compare from the local Discount Tire [discounttire.com] store. The local discount tire said the price match so I called the nearest store and he said they would price match the online Discount Tire Direct eBay stores price. When I tried to find a cheaper price online I found Discount Tire Direct [discounttiredirect.com] website which Discount Tire will also price match.

Discount Tire Local Out the Door Price: $839.67
Price Matched to Discount Tire Direct Out the Door Price: $640

Both prices include mounting, balance, tire disposal fees, taxes, valve stems, and tires. The online price for tires from Discount Tire Direct was $571 and the local shop charged an additional $69 to mount, balance, disposal, stems, etc.

Hope this helps out some other people. I attached my shopping carts to show the price difference. I'm sure you can get deals on lots of other tires. This also saves everyone from ordering tires online, having them shipped to your house, and having to load them in your car to get them mounted at the local tire shop.

Discount Tire Direct charges sales tax for items shipped to: AZ*(9.3%), OH*(7.0%), TX*(8.25%)

Sorry if this is sloppy, it's one of my first posts. I tried so take it easy on me.
Good Deal?

Discount tire has been pricematching as long as I can remember...

The best deal from DT or DTD is to wait until around a holiday when they have their stackable rebates, you can use their CarCareOne card to get an extra $100 off too.

The Kev Master knows that pretty much all national chain stores like Wal-Mart, Sears, Discount Tire, Hibdon Tire and Firestone Complete Auto Care all price match as long as you provide evidence

How did they price the installation/state fees? The online price was $571, then you said it was $640 OTD, so that's $69 -- but on their local quote, it was $66 just for the installation. It's like you didn't even have to pay the disposal fees and only 3/4ths of the state fees. I was looking at a set of tires and they're $475 online, vs a base price of $556 for local for just the tires, plus $79 in installation fees and then taxes make a total of $685 OTD. Even if I had to pay the full $79 in installation fees on top of the $475, that still nets a $131 saving over the local price, which seems awesome! This is an even bigger saving than price matching Tirerack.com since they factor in shipping for that price match.

I called and got the out the door price from the local Discount Tire store, sure how he calculated the installation and fees. I gave him the price of $571 for tires and he said $640 OTD. He was helpful and didn't hesitate at all when I ask about price matching.

Need tires for mom's 2008 nissan quest... I don't know anything about tires... I'm inclined to just enter her car info and pick the cheapest ones... Anyone got any tips?

Their tire calculator is a handy tool, though I wouldn't necessarily just get the cheapest ones. You might want to read through some of the reviews. Some tires are meant to last longer, ride smoother /quieter, handle better, meant for different weather conditions, etc. But you can definitely print out the online prices and use it to bargain in-store.

Yup, I do this at the America Tires (same company as Discount Tire). Sometimes it works out even better if you get them to pricematch and there's an additional rebate on top of it. Good thing is that when you pricematch to Discount Tire Direct, they don't charge shipping or tax to California so I usually come up pretty good.

The Kev Master was given two tire size options, 16" for the 3.5 S and SL while a 17" for the 3.5SE.

The Kev Master met the regional manager for Discount Tire many years ago and was told by him that they were expanding to have stores in states all over the US.

He has noticed however, they spun the Discount Tire Direct division into a separate company to possibly avoid paying taxes in states other than those that have their distribution warehouses in like TX, OH and AZ

Friend recently purchased 4 Michelin Defenders for 2010 Toyota Prius (a small, common, relatively inexpensive tire size) at Costco ($70 off for buying four tires).

Michelin Defender was top-rated by Consumer Reports for all-season, btw.

The price here: $129/tire w/$25 off if you buy four tires.

Costco price per tire: $117.99

And Costco gives $70 off if you buy 4 tires.

So, at least for that brand/model, there is certainly no Slick Deal here.
