Geico Car Insurance 8% discount for owning berkshire hathaway stocks YMMY

If you have an existing insurance with Geico or planning an insurance with GEICO, this will help you. Also you need to have a brokerage account to buy the shares into. If you already have both Geico and also own some shares of BRK.B / BRK.A call Geico and ask for "Berkshire Affiliation Discount". If you have other affiliation discounts, then this doesn't apply.

1. Buy One or more shares of BRK.B into your brokerage account. This is the stock you need to buy to get discount
https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3ABRK.B
2. Call GEICO customer care 1-800-861-8380 and inform them that you are a share holder of Berkshire Hataway and you want to add affiliation discount program to your account.

They do not check if you really own the shares. Also they won't ask how many shares you own. So buying just one or two will be ok. Also once you are in the discount program you can sell the shares.

For the people who are wondering why GEICO give you discount for owning a stock of Berkshire,

Berkshire is a Holding company headed by Warren Buffet and owns mejority of Geico Insurance Company.

Geico and all the other insurance companies with annoying commercials(that are all lies) are never the cheapest anyway. You could save allot more just researching insurance......

It is state specific and also depends on the current tier you are being rated on in your policy. If your rate is really good, there is a chance that you would not get any discount.

Wait a minute, I have all my retirement money in stocks in Vanguard Total Stock Market. Doesn't that mean I probably own some shares of Berkshire Hathaway in that fund?

EDIT: NVMD, just looked at fund prospectus, it's one of the top 10 holdings. Means I should be able to get this discount, right?
It doesn't mean that you own any brk shares from a legal standpoint but they don't check

GEICO General Insurance Company

Dear Nick *******:

We have received your discount inquiry. We will be happy to assist you today.

Unfortunately, your policy does not qualify for the Berkshire/Hathaway discount. At GEICO, each state has different discounts that we are able to offer. This discount is not available in Florida at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

However, we will automatically apply this discount if something changes in the future with the discounts we are able to offer in Florida.

Thank you for using our online services. We appreciate your business, and look forward to serving your insurance needs for years to come.

Sincerely,

Iris Torres

I recently saw online if you hold stock in Berkshire Hathaway you are eligible for a discount form Geico. What information do I need to submit in order to get this applied to my account.

Thanks

it can be one of the cheapest ways, always worth shopping around to multiple companies (even if it is a PITA). The ads seemed like typical bs to me but I did save a lot switching from Progressive to Geico. And the main reason was probably not Geico being "the absolute best deal," but Progressive being way overpriced. I had a clean driving record the whole time I had progressive (5 years) and they just refused to lower the price even as I got older and farther way from the dreaded low 20s high risk age. Slightly improved my policy and lowered the price quite a bit by switching to Geico.

how are they going to validate that you are a share holder? can't i "claim" to be a share holder and only bother to buy the share IF they actually ask for proof? :-S

They do not check if you really own the shares. Also they won't ask how many shares you own. So buying just one or two will be ok. Also once you are in the discount program you can sell the shares.
If they don't check, why buy even one? The round-trip commission and loss on the spread might cost you as much as you'll save in the first year.

Having a broker shop for you can save the hassle, but any way you cut it, it's definitely worth shopping around. Especially if you can enlist multiple discounts and package with your home and other insurances, you can sometimes save a ton. And once you get the best deal, don't just ignore, as pricing changes and you might find something better a couple years later.

I found that insurance companies offer low price on one product, and then jack up the other.

For our situation, Geico is lowest for car insurance, progressive is lowest for Motorcycle insurance, and Liberty Mutual is lowest for homeowners and Landlord insurance.

They tell you that you get multi-policy discounts if you bring all of the products under one roof, but the discounts are not enough to bring the total lower than just piece mealing it together.
