If you have an existing insurance with Geico or planning an insurance with GEICO, this will help you. Also you need to have a brokerage account to buy the shares into. If you already have both Geico and also own some shares of BRK.B / BRK.A call Geico and ask for "Berkshire Affiliation Discount". If you have other affiliation discounts, then this doesn't apply.

1. Buy One or more shares of BRK.B into your brokerage account. This is the stock you need to buy to get discount

2. Call GEICO customer care 1-800-861-8380 and inform them that you are a share holder of Berkshire Hataway and you want to add affiliation discount program to your account.

They do not check if you really own the shares. Also they won't ask how many shares you own. So buying just one or two will be ok. Also once you are in the discount program you can sell the shares.

For the people who are wondering why GEICO give you discount for owning a stock of Berkshire,

Berkshire is a Holding company headed by Warren Buffet and owns mejority of Geico Insurance Company.

I called in today and got the discount. Thanks OP for the tip! The rep was easy to work with. All I said was that I'd like the Berkshire Hathaway affiliate discount applied to my policy. She took off what came out to be 8% and the refund will come back to my credit card. I live in Missouri for reference.

Also, this discount won't show up in the Discounts section of your online profile.

Thanks OP, I'm not buying these stocks, but I didn't know that they had a discount for National Geographic Society. Saved me almost $40 on my policy & I was able to apply the discount online! Smilie

Emailed Geico about this discount, got a prompt reply. They do require proof of stock ownership. Confirmed either class a or b will work. Discount is 8% for NJ resident. Will buy a couple of class b shares.

Are the affiliation discounts all the same, regardless of which one it is?

I already have an alumni affiliation, just wondering if this one, or one of the others, may be more. And I assume it's just one affiliation discount allowed?

if either you or your spouse are on the same policy... and you get a professional organization discount, seems to only apply one of the named on the policy..

the berkshire stock ownership discount wasn't available to us. .but I found an organization discount that saved another $40 per year...


btw, if you haven't already, take the defensive driving class for $20... it will most likely save you 8 to 10% for the next 3 yrs (and do this per eligible person on the account)

I called asking about discounts and I had the max discounts except defensive driving (which I did take once and never submitted the certificate for some reason).

Anyhow, I mentioned that and the lady didn't even ask for proof of it (which I said I could submit) and she just added it to my account. Boom.
