I got a coupon on eBay for $25 to get me a roamio with lifetime for under $500. I thought it was expensive at the time but the roamio is the best dvr I've ever had. Compared to $160/mo we were paying for direcTV it's worth every penny.
For 3 mos of DTV you got the hardware and the lifetime subscription...not a bad ROI.

On top of that, my uverse package that I got includes 18Mbs speed, a year of amazon prime, and HB O-Go subscription for $39 (plus $7/month equipment rental). It also comes with local channels but I likely won't even hook up their receiver since I already have Tivo. With taxes and fees and everything it should be under $50/month.

I was used to paying $33/month for 12Mbs cable, so I get faster speed and HBO-Go for $50. That's how I'm looking at it, anyway. Dontknow

coolness.

My ISP was out today and did the speed upgrade to 15/3. They use bonding of two adsl signals
7.5 +7.5 (15) Down / 1.5+1.5 Up

Went from 59/mos to 39/mos. Save 20/mos and almost 5x the speed...Mkkkay nod

Interesting question, would an outside Antenna need to be grounded speaking of lightning rods?
I don't Hide but, I'm fairly certain that a lightning strike on my sixth floor balcony is fairly unlikely in a 22 story highrise EEK!

it'd be easier if I actually faced the broadcast antennas, but instead I live on the wrong side of a reinforced concrete box from the antennas, and the only way I can get an OTA signal is to stick the antenna outside the building envelope a few inches through my balcony railing.

I hear that my HOA is nearing an agreement with Google Fiber, I'm still holding out hope they'll be in my building soon, and as long as the pricing is similar to Kansas City I'll likely go back to having cable again (but for now, 50mbps internet with TWC for $35/month after taxes is a great deal) viva internet competition woot soon to be 3 companies offering 1gbps service in Austin, with TWC offering up to 300mbps

Can someone explain Plex on the Roku to me? I signed up for an account a few years ago but never used it .I found I still had an account. I don't remember it costing anything to use, but after downloading the app an my Roku it says I have a 30 day trial. What does this service actually cost if I just use it for movies and TV?

HBO in some form will soon be available without a cable subscription...

Thanks all, lot of great options here.

HD Antenna is definitely one thing we will do. Possibly a Tivo or DVR. Hulu, Roku, Apple TV...so many options laugh out loud
A magnavox dvr from Walmart lets you skip commercials, thus saving yourself about 22 minutes per hour. You can program the skip time both ways.

It should be...some will run a line to the cold water pipe...which is better than nothing.

On a tech note, they make RG6 coax with a ground wire on it, to make it easier for the Dish installers to ground them. Typically they run back to your cable box which usually has a ground bar in it.

Yes.

But if the antenna is installed in your attic, not so much. This is the antenna [amazon.com] I have in my attic and it works wonderfully!

It comes with everything you need with the exception of screws to mount the mounting bracket to something. I just used some decking screws to attach mine to the rafters in my attic. For my installation, the mounting bar actually points down with the antenna essentially 'hanging' from it. The mounting bar is highly customizable, and it works really, really well.

I now get every OTA channel within about 50 miles of my house, even the low power ones that are broadcast from behind the direction in which the antenna is pointed. So even though this antenna is a Yagi, it seems to act more like an omni as far as channels it pulls in. Dontknow
