Raddish's Dining Room Remodeling Project *UPDATE* #138, with a pic! Fresh paint and completed chair rail. Still have to do beauty boxes.

This project has been on the Honey-do list since the day we moved into this house back in August of 2005. Our dining room is pretty hideous. The previous owners used it as an office and cut holes in the walls, etc.

The color on the walls is nice, but that's the only good thing to say about it, really.

So far we haven't done much except replace the stupid little light that was in the room with a chandelier we got on Amazon.com for $26. It's stainless and matches the rest of the lights in the house, so we like it. We were considering buying a nearly identical chandelier from Lowe's for like $350, and honestly we like that one a bit better, for for $26 for the one we got we really couldn't be much happier. Smilie

So since I got laid off from my job I figured I'd take almost two weeks off before starting the new job and tackle this project. First up is priming the walls and removing the awful head-cap from over the window.

Next is pulling up the carpet and staples and removing the baseboards.

Then I'll either install the hardwood or fix all the holes in the walls, not sure which direction I'll go next, but both will hopefully be done by the end of next week.

Later, I'll be wainscoting the dining room, but I have to pick a pattern first. I'm not sure what I want to do just yet.

I also intend to install an in-wall display case for my wife's butterfly art. This will also include some new lighting to show off her collection. That'll probably happen before the wainscoting, and indeed may even drive the wainscoting design.

I've uploaded a few pictures of what I am starting with. I'll post more as I go along, just like before. Smilie

Are you staying in the area or moving out of state?

Just west of Meridianville, far east Toney. Pulaski Pike, MLK, Rideout (aka Research Park Blvd) and the 53 overpass.

I echo the no peach paint -- go for a dark taupe/mushroom in a matte finish-- it will look lovely, rich, and not pink. Or go for an olive/sage green (that's what I used, and always get compliments on it).

I solidly agree with those colors nod Peach will suck eggs as a color for the dining room; unless it's a Southern thing. I've seen colors down there; that would never be used up north in rooms. I think your Realtor is a little whacked on this one, imho.

My mother just had her dining room and kitchen painted, its peach but a darker peach than you would normally see. It is awful. Been less than 2 weeks and she is going to have it repainted to a cranberry color? She is 60 years old and will do what she wants but g/f and I don't agree.

I think peach and the orange colors are the hardest to paint and be happy with. Maybe in small rooms like a bathroom; you might get away with them - or as an accent color - but I've yet to see them work in a whole room.

The reason I'm saying this to Raddish is - I made this mistake in my dining room - I picked a color that should have been one color - but because it was a semi-gloss finish instead of matte - it ended up looking like "peach" - I wanted to throw up vomit when it was finished - that is why I'm recommending something else as a color. Even if I had gone with the matte finish - I still think it would have looked horrible and would have been repainted again. I kept taking the paint back to be adjusted with white; and it only made it worse; then I tried having them add some taupe to it - and no success.

Fast Food Joints paint with these colors in order to get people in and out quickly from their establishments - it's not "dining friendly".

What does your husband do? There are actually quite a few jobs available in Huntsville, mostly in the engineering and software realms.

I'm moving into Madison city from the county to reduce my commute and get closer to friends and family.
