And diamonds aren't everything. Cool stones are fun and you get a lot of bang for your buck, pearls are timeless, and birthstones are always thoughtful.

Diamonds aren't anything. They're worthless pieces of crystallized carbon that aren't even remotely rare. They're expensive because people buy into the idea that they should be expensive.
Pearls are nice if the person LOVES pearls. Just be aware that there is pretty much zero resale value for pearls, so the person has to really want to keep them forever.
I'm a personal fan of the semi-precious stones. Garnets are my favorite and I really like peridot.

True dat. Russia has more diamonds than anyone can believe, and could crush the market if they wanted to. But that would devalue their diamonds, too, so they don't.

My niece is a peridot birthstone. I was never 'into' it, but now I love it and enjoy shopping for peridot to save for her for when she's older.
I know a lady whose husband brought her back gorgeous garnet jewelry from the Czech Republic. I'm a fan of amber, all kinds. I also love blue topaz. That's my birthstone.
I'm also a fan of rocks. Malachite is one of my personal favorites as of late. I love druzy too, to me they are so unique and cool.
