Most shitty country is just shitty pop, albeit with vocal inflections and pedal steel. I suppose the pop flavor is at least more likely to use a different chord progression.

Had to look him up... I'd wonder if it was a financial decision, lots of money in country music.
But, that being said, the singer for the band I was part of in high school went on to sing for heavy metal/death metal bands, but was also known to pick out some Dwight Yoakam.
And there's always Hank Williams the Third.
