NASCAR 2015 No OT please Chase for the Sprint Cup CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND Final Race: Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway

I haven't ever seen much love around here for Nascar but I figured I would see if there is enough discussion to warrant a thread.

If you don't like Nascar, if you don't get Nascar, if all it looks like to you is driving around in a circle then just go away.

If you aren't aware of the huge changes that Nascar has made in recent years it may be worth another look. Quite a few years back they started a "playoff" system known as The Chase. Last year they made a huge change in that by using an elimination system in the playoff to reduce the remaining racers eligible for the championship after each round. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the details now, but I'm interested in other opinions on both having a playoff and the way Nascar is doing it.

I welcome negative comments, but just keep it respectful and including reasons for them. If you just want to insult Nascar and oval-racing then go somewhere else.

could be out of a racer's code of conduct type scenario? Dontknow

like those a lap, or laps, down let the lead of the pack without contention? not that this is how it went down, but just one of the possibilities. shrug.
There was some of that for sure. Not so much to just let them all get to the front, but more to not race too hard against the contenders because you wouldn't want to be the one to wreck one or more of them and take away their shot at the title. But at that level, and with the money involved, any one of the remaining racers would go for the win themselves if they had a shot at it. Winning that final race, with the exposure it had, could mean not only the huge paycheck for the win but millions in sponsorship dollars for the future.

Jimmy hater here Wave

Well, I used to be anyway. I didn't care for Jeff Gordon much when he was first with Hendrick. He used to be such a whiny little baby when anything went wrong and he would spread the blame around on everyone else. No question he has always been one of the best, but I hated his crybaby ways. laugh out loud

When Jimmie Johnson became his teammate it looked like he was going to turn into another whiny Jeff Gordon clone. And he did for a while. But eventually it turned around and I think what happened is Jeff instead became more like Jimmie, who was a whole lot more likeable. Jimmie has actually managed to convert me into somewhat of a Jeff Gordon fan as well. laugh out loud

I won't ever call either of them my favorite driver, but they both get my respect for everything they have accomplished. I really don't have a favorite driver any more. I was a Mark Martin fan until he left Roush racing and not so much after that.
We all have our faves and not so faves. Can't stand the Busch brothers and was a die hard Earnhardt fan until his passing. Still not a fan of his son.

Eh everything comes full circle. My question is how much strength will the sport have in say 10 years. It's been declining for a while now in notoriety and attendance.

One weird thing with me. I don't care much for Kurt Busch. I've never been a big Tony Stewart fan. I'm kind of indifferent about Kevin Harvick. I would like to see Danica Patrick have some success in Nascar but I don't think she will ever be better than mediocre in a stock car. But even though I don't care much for any of those individuals, for some reason I am a big fan of the Stewart-Haas racing team as a whole. Not sure how that happened but it has. laugh out loud

I don't dislike Earnhardt Jr. but he's never impressed me with his driving skills. I will follow him more now that he has a fellow Yooper as his crew chief that brings some local ties for me.

I am lucky to live very close to RIR. NASCAR is very important here; every time a race is in town, we get a ton of people, which is great for community revenue. Anyway, I started following NASCAR soon after RIR opened, and I have been to quite a few races. There are a few drivers that are from my area, and it is always fun to root for the home town guys nod
I'll be there in April. Whee

I'm headed to Daytona in a few days if the weather allows. Can't wait! Whee

Anybody happen to watch the qualifying today for the Daytona 500? I recorded it and just watched part of it. The only way to describe it is Facepalm

I feel pretty safe in saying that the plan for qualifying that they came up with for this year will have some serious alteration for next year. laugh out loud

I have no idea why they thought this group qualifying had any chance of going well. Fortunately all it determines is the front row starting positions and guarantees a spot for the next four fastest cars. The Budweiser Duel qualifying races this Thursday will finalize the starting lineup for the Daytona 500.

woot! Have fun in Daytona, and let me know when you get here in April nod Are you familiar with the Richmond area? If not, I can help you out with best places to park, get a hotel, etc.

RIR would be a cool place to watch a race. I've never been to a Nascar event. If I was going to pick one to go to it would be the night race at Bristol though.
Bristol is very nice nod I've only been there once but I liked it a lot.

I live near DC, so I normally just come for race day. I've been to Richmond several times, most recently last spring.

Daytona should be a blast.

Keselowski fan here. I know a lot of people hate him, but he drives the heck out of his car, gives 110% and knows no one is going to give him an inch so he takes it! Jeff Gordon can suck an egg...

I've done Bristol, Brickyard, and Michigan...and would say Bristol was just incredible. Such a neat atmosphere, nothing like it! Just walls of people, thousands and thousands, and then the roar of the cars, you can see everything...it is just an unbelievable venue.

I was a huge Martin fan, until he started to hop cars and teams and go down hill. That was when I got out of watching a bunch of races too. I used to watch with my Grandma before she passed. She was a Gordon fan, I was a Martin fan, and we would pick on each other all the time, haha.

But I could tell you the 1st NASCAR race I ever watched. The 1998 Texas 500. I know that because I was told (and still tell EVERYONE) that you cannot watch NASCAR without having "a guy"...so I was in the process of picking my guy, and settled on the #97 John Deere and Chad Little because he did so well. It was his only top 5 of his career laugh out loud and I moved to Mark Martin (who actually one that race).

Speaking of home town guys, Dale Earnhardt Jr's new crew chief this year, Greg Ives, is a fellow Yooper. Whee I will definitely be following Jr. this year to see how that works out.
Glad you mentioned that, I hadn't checked up on Greg but the MTU Alumni email had an article a couple years back that he was the crew chief for a car. Glad to see a Husky reaching the pit box for a top driver!

I'm over Patrick. I'm convinced she just doesn't have that mojo that is needed to be a consistent success. Yes, she could have a decent day, a really good day, or even a top 5 finish and they will make it seem like the world is having a renaissance if she does. I'm just not impressed. I'm with you on the rest though as well. Harvick, blah, Stewart, yeah ok, blah and so on. Kesolowski seems to have that mojo that I'm referring to and the anticipatory skills to stay out of harm's way. I just root for Chevy drivers though.

I've been to Dover, Richmond, Daytona, Pocono, Martinsville, Brickyard, Atlanta, Darlington, and Nashville Superspeedway. Of that list, Martinsville or Darlington have to be my favorites. You just feel something different about being at both tracks. Daytona is a heck of a party.

My driver was Tony Stewart, but once he left Gibbs and made an alliance with the Evil Empire (can't stand Rick Hendrick) I've lost some interest. Denny Hamlin is my driver now. I've met him a couple of times. Very quiet but very friendly.

Richard Petty was my first favorite driver. I've met him several times. He's always been good with the fans. He's definitely one of the big reasons the sport is where it is today.

Definitely looking forward to the Nascar season. My dad tried to describe the Daytona qualifying, and it sounded pretty...convoluted. Much like the chase format, I suspect.

I've been to the race in Brooklyn, Michigan, twice, and I need to drag my son there before too long. I think it's been about 25 years, so I'm overdue to head back! I need to check out the Brickyard as well, but we always seem to have swimming conflicts that weekend.

I went to Purdue when Newman was there, 3454 years ago, so he is a favorite, but I like a lot of the drivers and dislike a few as well.

I wanted Danica to do well, but she is just not good. I do believe that sports help to prove feminists incorrect. A woman is not the same as a man because physically they are just completely different.

However, I believe that doesn't play into racing. A woman should be able to physically compete in these events and be able to be one of the elites. I do think it is a bit of a boys club that keeps them out (how come there has NEVER been a female crew chief??). So seeing one make it through the barriers, to only be completely mediocre is a let down. I do hope she helps drive more women to the sport (hick, hick) and that we'll see a woman be an elite competitor while at the elite level of a major national sport though.

Big year for Danica, being the last year of her contract with Stewart-Haas. She would have to pretty much completely fail this year to not be back with them though. She brings a stupid amount of money to the team with GoDaddy and she will remain very popular even if she remains at the average level of driver that she has been. Most likely she will remain a middle of the pack driver who may occasionally pull off some good finishes or even win a couple of races. But even with the level of equipment she has with Stewart-Haas she most likely won't ever be a contender for the championship.

Is it because she is a woman? Who knows? There are quite a few drivers in the bottom half of the standings who seem to be of the same caliber of average drivers who will never be competitive in the top ten spots except for maybe an occasional good finish. Not many of them get analyzed as to why they aren't top tier drivers the way Danica does.

It will be interesting to see how she does with her new crew chief. He is more of an engineer-type like she was used to when she was open-wheel racing and that may help her step up her game a little. I don't think it will help all that much but it could get her up a little higher in the final standings. They didn't do well together at the end of last season, but making a change like that in the middle of a season is tough anyway, and he hadn't ever been a crew chief before. Now that his position is permanent, and with a full season ahead together it could make a difference.

Danica knows why she's there - to sell tickets. I was down at driver intros at Darlington last season. After Danica got introduced and hopped into the pickup that was to take her around the track, somebody yelled, and all she did was "attempt" to fix her hair.

She's definitely attractive, and she has to have a shred of talent to make it to that level, but she's probably on the talent level of guys like Michael Annett, Justin Allgaier, Dave Marcis, Jimmy Means, etc. They're good enough to make the field, but just not good enough to win. Granted Marcis DID win a few times back in the 70s, but for the most part was not a top tier racer.
