I haven't ever seen much love around here for Nascar but I figured I would see if there is enough discussion to warrant a thread.
If you don't like Nascar, if you don't get Nascar, if all it looks like to you is driving around in a circle then just go away.
If you aren't aware of the huge changes that Nascar has made in recent years it may be worth another look. Quite a few years back they started a "playoff" system known as The Chase. Last year they made a huge change in that by using an elimination system in the playoff to reduce the remaining racers eligible for the championship after each round. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the details now, but I'm interested in other opinions on both having a playoff and the way Nascar is doing it.
I welcome negative comments, but just keep it respectful and including reasons for them. If you just want to insult Nascar and oval-racing then go somewhere else.

like those a lap, or laps, down let the lead of the pack without contention? not that this is how it went down, but just one of the possibilities. shrug.
Well, I used to be anyway. I didn't care for Jeff Gordon much when he was first with Hendrick. He used to be such a whiny little baby when anything went wrong and he would spread the blame around on everyone else. No question he has always been one of the best, but I hated his crybaby ways.
When Jimmie Johnson became his teammate it looked like he was going to turn into another whiny Jeff Gordon clone. And he did for a while. But eventually it turned around and I think what happened is Jeff instead became more like Jimmie, who was a whole lot more likeable. Jimmie has actually managed to convert me into somewhat of a Jeff Gordon fan as well.
I won't ever call either of them my favorite driver, but they both get my respect for everything they have accomplished. I really don't have a favorite driver any more. I was a Mark Martin fan until he left Roush racing and not so much after that.
Eh everything comes full circle. My question is how much strength will the sport have in say 10 years. It's been declining for a while now in notoriety and attendance.

I don't dislike Earnhardt Jr. but he's never impressed me with his driving skills. I will follow him more now that he has a fellow Yooper as his crew chief that brings some local ties for me.
I'm headed to Daytona in a few days if the weather allows. Can't wait!
I feel pretty safe in saying that the plan for qualifying that they came up with for this year will have some serious alteration for next year.
I have no idea why they thought this group qualifying had any chance of going well. Fortunately all it determines is the front row starting positions and guarantees a spot for the next four fastest cars. The Budweiser Duel qualifying races this Thursday will finalize the starting lineup for the Daytona 500.

Bristol is very nice
Daytona should be a blast.
But I could tell you the 1st NASCAR race I ever watched. The 1998 Texas 500. I know that because I was told (and still tell EVERYONE) that you cannot watch NASCAR without having "a guy"...so I was in the process of picking my guy, and settled on the #97 John Deere and Chad Little because he did so well. It was his only top 5 of his career

I've done Bristol, Brickyard, and Michigan...and would say Bristol was just incredible. Such a neat atmosphere, nothing like it! Just walls of people, thousands and thousands, and then the roar of the cars, you can see everything...it is just an unbelievable venue.
My driver was Tony Stewart, but once he left Gibbs and made an alliance with the Evil Empire (can't stand Rick Hendrick) I've lost some interest. Denny Hamlin is my driver now. I've met him a couple of times. Very quiet but very friendly.
Richard Petty was my first favorite driver. I've met him several times. He's always been good with the fans. He's definitely one of the big reasons the sport is where it is today.
I've been to the race in Brooklyn, Michigan, twice, and I need to drag my son there before too long. I think it's been about 25 years, so I'm overdue to head back! I need to check out the Brickyard as well, but we always seem to have swimming conflicts that weekend.
I went to Purdue when Newman was there, 3454 years ago, so he is a favorite, but I like a lot of the drivers and dislike a few as well.
However, I believe that doesn't play into racing. A woman should be able to physically compete in these events and be able to be one of the elites. I do think it is a bit of a boys club that keeps them out (how come there has NEVER been a female crew chief??). So seeing one make it through the barriers, to only be completely mediocre is a let down. I do hope she helps drive more women to the sport (hick, hick) and that we'll see a woman be an elite competitor while at the elite level of a major national sport though.

Is it because she is a woman? Who knows? There are quite a few drivers in the bottom half of the standings who seem to be of the same caliber of average drivers who will never be competitive in the top ten spots except for maybe an occasional good finish. Not many of them get analyzed as to why they aren't top tier drivers the way Danica does.
It will be interesting to see how she does with her new crew chief. He is more of an engineer-type like she was used to when she was open-wheel racing and that may help her step up her game a little. I don't think it will help all that much but it could get her up a little higher in the final standings. They didn't do well together at the end of last season, but making a change like that in the middle of a season is tough anyway, and he hadn't ever been a crew chief before. Now that his position is permanent, and with a full season ahead together it could make a difference.

She's definitely attractive, and she has to have a shred of talent to make it to that level, but she's probably on the talent level of guys like Michael Annett, Justin Allgaier, Dave Marcis, Jimmy Means, etc. They're good enough to make the field, but just not good enough to win. Granted Marcis DID win a few times back in the 70s, but for the most part was not a top tier racer.
