Waaay OT, but hey, this is chit chat, and I'm feelin' chit chatty!

For all you mommas out there, when you brought your new baby home, what did you wish you'd received as gifts, instead of certain other things? i.e. What did you find most useful, and most necessary? My cousin's wife is pregnant (yeah, lovely timing. For anyone wondering, she's due a month and a half before I was, and they're having a little girl. *sigh* Sadwalk), and so I'm finding myself trying to dream up things to give them that are practical and useful, instead of some of the regular baby crap that people give other people, without realizing that it serves no real purpose. It's a happy occasion for them, and it's not supposed to be a sad one for me, so I'm doing my best to try to make it as positive as I can, so I'm killing two birds with one stone here. Retail therapy, and being helpful.

I have some diapers and wipes already. Only one box of newborn 2's, and a box of 3's, but I plan on picking up more 3's for them, since as I understand it, that's the size that they stay at longest. What else? What'd you have to go out and buy, that nobody ever thought to give you?
i found we got WAYY too many clothes - most of them were very small sizes and my son was only able to wear them once before outgrowing them. Frown
blankets, alright. we used a lot of receiving blankets though. wished we had received more of:

teething gel
tylenol
gas drops
diapers/ wipes (we didn't get ANY as gifts! EEK! )
gift cards (to buy formula as needed, because formula needs and expiration dates can't be known ahead of time.)

i liked the idea of prepared meals, that is very thoughtful. hug

knowing what i do now about new motherhood, i find it a lot easier to find baby shower gifts that most other people do not give. it makes the gift that much more appreciated, and you know it will be used.

So, I've been testing out a theory for a few months now and I'm sure most of you have already figured this out, but there's a lot of new faces around here that might not know.

If you have a coupon for $x/2 or $x/3 or whatever, as long as you buy at least 2 or 3 or whatever and use 1 of the coupons on EACH, they will not beep at Target. I have tested this on countless coupons on all different items and it never fails. I usually divide the coupons in two and put half of them in the top of the pile and half of them in the middle/end of the pile. This does not hold true for TQ, just MFQ.

I was actually even able to use the $1/2 general mills cereal today like this. I bought ten boxes of cereal and used ten coupons. And the kicker is that half of my cereal was Kelloggs. NONE OF THE COUPONS BEEPED.

So as far as the Lean Cuisine coupon $1.50/3. As long as you buy three of them and use three coupons, they should not beep.

That's one I'll be trying out - thx!

I did "accidentally" throw an extra $ off 2 whatevers TQ in the other day, though, thinking this might be the case, but with the TQ it didn't fly. Has this been the case with u?

Actually, I think it is 40 DOLLARS total of savings not 40 COUPONS. I keep mine below that amount and never have had a problem. Whenever I go OVER $40 IN SAVINGS, I always have to have a manager come over and it takes FOREVER!!!!

Yep, that happened to me today. I used over $50 in q's. I completely forgot about that one. It was ok, but it took time for the mgr. to come over.

1) The "shame" of couponing. I don't care if strangers see me using coupons, but I live in terror that I'm going to run into one of my students when I'm doing a big order, esp. at our local Walgreens. I'm a college professor at a big state school and we live right by the university so all my local stores are heavily frequented by the students. I did run in to one of my favorite students at Walgreens once, but I didn't have anything too embarrassing in my cart yet, laugh out loud

Once, at Smiths (local Kroger affiliate) I did run into one of the other profs in my department. All I had in my cart was: one case of wine laugh out loud and a bunch of single serve frozen fish fillets. This was because I was doing a wine rebate and had coupons for $2 off fish wyb the wine (of course) and the fish was only $1. He took one look at my cart and was like, I want to come over to your house! laugh out loud
* snip

Thanks for the laugh.
You are SO right about wanting to avoid runing into students or people you know!

I learned this early on when during one of my first years teaching I had a student who worked at a local grocery store and he would entertain everyone with tales of what the principal/ asst. principal bought when they came through his line. Embarrassment

Sometimes I'm not too popular with some of my students/parents and I can imagine the negative spin they could put on my avid coupon use Secret so I have been known to avoid stores where these kids work. Bluesbrother

If you get burp cloths, get the cloth diapers at T (6 in a pack, I think?). They absorb spit up SO much better and hold up better than those cutesy ones that you can get!
These were some of my favorite gifts and they held up through using them with all 3 kids. You can personalize the burp cloths by buying a small amount of cute ribbon and sewing a couple of strips length wise (along where the pieces are sewn together). Some people just stencil some baby details (with paint) on the ends. I can posts pics if that would help.

My sister took regular white cloth diapers and sewed thick pieces of ribbon on both ends. Thick enough to wrap around the end and still have 1 inch of rippon on each side of the diaper (reversible).

This has nothing to do with the baby question that was asked. My youngest is 9 and I can't actually remember what it was like and what I needed?

Anyhow, just wanted to point out that with the $10 Shower cleaner in today's paper I was going to buy mine at Walgreen's but the one at Target has 2 sprayers instead of one. It is a newer one. I currently own the one with one sprayer and it works okay but I think the one with two up and down would work better. Just my .02. So, I bought one at T instead.
Thanks for this info on the sprayers. I actually picked one up at Target today, but it is going back as the cashier totally messed up my cpns.

Don't know if this will still help, but I have read that if you use more than 40 Q's it will require a managers approval.
I just went to W for the first time in a year to use up some q's that expire tomorrow. I don't have a ST so I only used food ones. My total was $80 down to $51. Not bad, but nothing else but mfq. Required manager approval. She came by and just typed in code and key. The girl said she just saved $30. Manager said ok. I said what is that for? She said because you used q's, no big deal. I said ok and left. So I'm not sure what the amount is that requires it, but definitely less than $40 for me.

Before the kid was born, we counted 12 outfits, put them aside and exchanged the rest up for 6 mo, 12 mo and some older ones. Best thing we did. I just told a new mom to do the same thing, she said but the outfits are so cute, I said you're crazy, return them all right now!

Teehee I so hear you. Haven't had any students working at stores where I do "deal" shopping, but I did once (thankfully it was for a brief time) have a student working at the local liquor store. (It's basically the *only* place to buy booze around here except for WAG and the grocery store.) Finally I had to make some joke about it, and he said, "Oh, that's nothing. You should see how often So-and-so [another professor] comes in here." EEK! While I'm glad I wasn't the one who was raising eyebrows-- they definitely do talk!

Have had lots of students working in local bars/restaurants, so pretty much the same deal. Luckily it's so far just been ones who seem to like me. Smilie
