What educational websites and apps do you like for your kids?

257 35 March 19, 2016 at 03:30 PM
There's a ton of sites/apps out there and I'm trying to find out which ones other parents like. I've got a first and a third grader and I want to split their screen time between video games they can choose, and other ("educational") that I have more say-so in.

I would put no ot in the title or you are going to get recommendations like 4chan, and unsolicited advice about letting a child use a computer / play video games.

Also Minecraft is awesome

Get Bookworm, it's a game kids will love but it's also an excellent way to expand their vocabulary and improve their spelling. There are several sites you can get Bookworm from but I prefer Steam as it allows you to play games across multiple devices. Plus they have free demos so you can try out the games before buying them.

My daughter (age 5) loves starfall.com (website and app), pbskids.org, the kid lego ones. Amazon has a decent selection of free ones in their Underground Apps, they are installed on my normal Android tablet. She likes tickettoread.com but that is set up through her school.

There are tons of games featuring the pbs kids characters, she's playing an ABC one with Super Why right now and has a Word Girl one on deck next. Peg and cat are fun but I've banned Caillou from the tablet. Can't stand him.

You can try the following resources as well.
  • eduplace.com
  • tlsbooks.com
  • SoftSchools.com
  • HighlightsKids.com
  • math-aids.com
Also try out Nat Geo Kids, NASA JPL Kids sites too.

If the kid is interested in coding then code.org and alice.org would be useful.

For engineering, I received a recommendation to look at TeachEngineering.Org. And every now and then, I make my kids to watch TED talks, often you will get interesting talks that excite the kids - especially ocean animals, exploration, robotics and 3D printing.
