In accordance with Lounge rules...gall bladders, who needs them?

So I get mine removed in the morning. I hear it's more or less routine and that we don't technically need them. So I'm giving mine up.

I'm going to ask that the put it in a jar so I can bring it home.

And how is that different from any other married man? If we could get them to do what we want all the time, we'd all be on Cloud9

I had mine out in '99, at just under 22. It was slow, had a fair amount of mid section pain. Afterwards I had a fair amount above average pain I guess compared to what others said, but they didn't give me pain meds (I wouldn't have taken them anyway). Left shoulder did bother for some time, they told me that beforehand. When I'd lay from one side to the other it felt like something would "flop"/move in there, to this day I wonder if they left something in there that isn't supposed to be. I hayed cows extra before I left that morning, had surgery, had to stay over, came home next day. Day after that I was doing chores again (since they need done no matter what). It was not fun getting on the tractor or hauling buckets of feed (which took much longer since I wasn't supposed to lift much), but as painful as the staples were I could tell if I started to pull something wrong. I just had the small holes.

I have some questions.

After several bouts the past 2 years of extreme abdominal pain and vomiting, I had to have emergency surgery last week to remove my gallbladder.

Was told it was the worst case any of the surgical team had ever seen. Extremely inflamed with several stones, and one stone that had passed, was blocking a bile duct. Pain was so bad after surgery that I had to be restrained from throwing myself out of the window of my room. Spent 5 days in the hospital. Unable to eat and barely able to sleep. A stent was put in to help with the stuck bile duct stone, and it has to be removed in a few more weeks.

Sadwalk

Does this get better? I still can't sleep more than an hour or so at a time sitting upright. Can't lay on my side. No appetite and usually stop at 6-8 small bites. Anything I eat goes right through me. The pain is still pretty bad, and not managed well; they are blaming staffing shortages for this and every other mistake. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Anyone else unable to eat the first several weeks? Frown

Statins caused huge gall stones for me, some that blocked my pancreatic duct, leading to recurring pancreatitis for several months. When they remove the stuck stone, you will likely have immense relief. After gall bladder removal, different people have different trigger foods that cause digestive problems. Mostly, stay away from fatty or greasy foods for the first several weeks. Re-introduce them to your diet in very small quantities. One former co-worker couldn't ever enjoy pork BBQ again. My sore point is almost anything dairy, cheese, especially.

I hope for your sake, you get relief very soon. It's definitely painful. Sadwalk

Thank you, Frog. Peace

I can't eat at all and have lost 10 pounds since surgery a week ago. Food either isn't appealing or just goes right through me, and I'm not doing any fatty foods at all since they still need to go back in and remove a stent.

The pain is unbearable. I got a lecture about pain and medication and then, in the same breath, the resident acknowledges again how bad my gallbladder was and tells me not to compare my operation to anyone else's. (I keep hearing the pain should've subsided more than it has.)

Can only catch an hour or two of sleep sitting in an upright position. Everything else hurts.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Eek! EEK! That sounds unbearable. If you're in pain, it's completely understandable you don't find most food appealing. Did they perform any ultrasound/MRI after the surgery, to be certain they didn't possibly miss any "hidden" stones hiding anywhere?

I was fortunate my gall bladder removal and recovery was completely non-eventful. I rather strictly followed their guidelines, and took complete and total rest for two weeks afterward.

It's absolutely miserable not having a gall bladder.

Been over 2 years since removing mine and still getting used to it.

Yesterday I woke up after 9 hours of sleep. So I slept well. Ate breakfast and it went right through me. Was miserable and in bed the rest of the day. When the food goes right through you, it fatigues you and also your heart rate changes and you get hot and sweaty... But most of that goes away except for the extreme exhaustion.

#1 cause of gallstones is losing weight too fast. Doctors need to prescribe Ursodiol to people that are losing weight so that this doesn't happen to them.

Yes. So one stone was stuck and they put in a stent. I didn't even get all the details on that, but I have to have more surgery to remove the stent.

So far, 95% of my time has been spent trying to find food to eat (you'd think this would be easy for a vegetarian) and in the bathroom passing loose or watery stool. The idea of going through another surgery in 3 weeks is sheer anguish.

They'll likely remove the stent via ERCP, i.e., a scope down your gullet.

Hope you start feeling better!

I had mine removed in 1996. No stones, just a "low functioning" GB. I also had a lot of "sludge". Having mine removed caused Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. It took YEARS (and several specialists) to finally get that diagnosed. I had pancreatitis quite a few times and had to have a pancreatic stent for awhile. I can honestly say that it took about 20 years before I finally started to make peace with food. I hope your experience is better. hug

SIDE NOTE: Whatever happened to The Raddish? Huh

Thanks. I'll have to call them and ask what and when since no one has followed up with me.
