Costco is currently clearing out their stock of 40 year old single malt scotch whisky at $199.97. It was for $399.99. It seems the price is valid at all stores (at least in Illinois). Also, it's not on sale in all states, as one of the members pointed out, it's not on sale in Delaware. I would strongly suggest to call ahead and ask for Item # 746526 for inventory and also the price. Originally was selling for $699.99.

Also, please do not compare this with blue label or any other blended scotch whisky, this is single malt, which tends to be little expensive and smoother (at least for me). I have always loved Costco brand Kirkland's single malt offerings and I am pretty sure won't be disappointed with this. Also, the price might say $399.99, but ring up as $199.97 as price change might have happened recently.

Can I get this without a Costco membership?

Yes, at least in California. Anyone here can go into any Costco without a membership if they want to buy just liquor. State alcohol licenses do not allow restrictions regarding memberships.

Why is it that it's only certain states that always have great Costco deals on liquor?
Alcohol taxes are very low in California. Why, I don't know. Sales tax high, gas tax high, sin tax low?

They don't want to hurt the wine industry, but don't know why spirits are taxed so low.

If you click on nndeals link, look under the picture. There will be a link to a pdf file named "Warehouse Availability". That lists all the locations which carried this item at one point. No guarantee it is still in stock, but it's a good start if you wanted to track down a bottle.

U have to make sure to ask them how much it is in the system as I saw few for $399.99 in Illinois but they haven't changed the sign yet and showed $199.97 in their computer system

The notion that Costco is "clearing out" something that they've been waiting 40 years to sell is amusing.
Costco has only been around for 32 years; Costco has not been waiting to sell this for 40 years. The distillery (or maybe a middleman?) has been waiting to sell this for 40 years and struck an agreement with Costco a few years ago to do so.

Best way to know is to call your local Costco with the item # and ask for selling price.

So then... these hit their expiration date at 43 years or so?

Nice find! I enjoy a single malt every now and then, and when I can afford it even a double or triple malt! *wink*

That reminds me, I still have a bottle of some 50 year old whiskey, and some French 1910 cogniac in my garage, awaiting to try one of them out, and sell the other.
But I guess I'll have to look around for a buyer....

Is it awkward to give this as a gift? Like an important client. It's suppose to be a high end gift but it says Kirkland.

Are you guys playing a skit? Aged for 40 years doesn't mean 40 years old. Probably much more than that. Forty is the number of years it spent in the casket before being bottled. There is no expiration date in distilled alcohol, only in fermented. Are you guys over 21? This is an adults only thread. We talk about cigars, alcohol, sex, politics and the economy. Please... it's passed your bed time!

It depends on how well versed the client is with whiskies. If he is not, don't because he will only see the word kirkland. If he is he will only see the words Glenlivet 40 years.

If you live within shooting distance, I'm willing to check this 50 year old. But I pass on the frenchie.
