There are data points online of people being able to add the balance of the Amex gift cards to their Venmo accounts for no fee. Some have added to account, sent money to spouse or friend, and spouse/friend transfers back to their bank account.

Could also use to make actual purchases in categories that typically aren't covered by a credit card bonus category, in which case you earn effectively 5% back

Not a horrible deal but nothing incredible given the work required

You can only add 3 cards to venmo in 6 mo. Vemo charges a fee. what's the point?

It is 6 cards in a rolling 6 month period, and it is no fees. When you add the card, check the box that says to use this card when there are no funds in your Venmo account and it will clearly say "no fee."

If you spend the $200 to pay bills or at any other place that takes AmEx, you get 5% out of this.
