So off topic ~ glad this is the lounge! Long!

Need some advice. I have driven myself to sickness (literally I am sicker than a dog) trying to decide how to handle this.

So I have been in charge of a fundraiser. For 3 weeks I have worked my tail off and have done everything the President of the cheerleading board asked me to do. Including asking for parents and telling them that they will only get compensated if they work. As in you may be part of the group, but no work no $$ to go towards uniforms. Which was fine with everyone.

Two days before the fundraiser, an impromptu meeting is called with me and all the parents (about a dozen) and the ENTIRE board. We're all standing there waiting for it to begin and have no idea what it's about. Then the President turns towards me and says I understand you told all the parents (this group and two other groups) that they would get the $$ for their uniforms. I pipe up yes. She says that's not what we said!!! I'm dumbfounded. A member of the board asks me where I got the info. I tell her the president and I spoke numerous times. She still denies and says we need the $$$ to go towards the awards banquet.

Another member of the board finally says well if that is what was promised, we have to honor it so the parents can choose. Either donate it to the ceremony or keep it. Everyone says fine. Then the president says to everyone ~ now no one here has a problem DONATING their $$, do they? No one says a word.

I follow the president to the next meeting b/c now I know it's about me. (I missed the first one) I want to hear what she says about me. It's basically the same saying there was a MISUNDERSTANDING and we will honor the previous agreement so keep the $$ if you are in a FINANCIAL BIND but mind you if you do there is NO AWARDS BANQUET for the girls. Everyone is intimidated.

Cut to two days later. Fundraiser happens. Don't know how much $$ yet. I have the list of workers. I told the business to make sure I am the only person who picks up the check. I'm sure my name will be on it. So I will have to cash it or sign it over.

My problem is this: The parents have come up to me quietly and said I want my $$ but am afraid of backlash. And the uniforms were $400. Extras included in that. So compensation even if it is $20 or so will help.

Here's what I'm contemplating: Sign the check over and give a list of people who worked and the amount they SHOULD receive and HOPE they do so. But I'm sure they will just tell them this is the amount, do you want to donate it or have us write you a check. A bit intimidating and most will surely say donate it when put on the spot in front of everyone.

OR cash the check and write checks to each individual from my own checkbook. Making copies, of course. Then telling the board, this is what I've done (don't have any rules to go by) and this is the amount of everything. Then the parents have to go cash the checks and have time to have the $ and decide if they REALLY want to donate it, then they will come back to the next practice and give it to the president.

This is a pee wee organization by the way in a really really small town. I'm sure I'll get burned for the last choice, but I feel that in order for the parents to have a true choice in the matter, that I have to take matters in my own hands. Feeling deceived and not trusting the board at the moment.

I also have future fundraisers in the works to go straight to the banquet and will be up front with the parents that this is where the $ will go. That's if they want my help after this!! They've never had fundraisers before (except selling cookie dough etc) and I feel they go greedy when it go close to the actual $$ being in their hands.

OH oh oh plus a member of the board talked to me after the fundraiser and told me there is a banquet no matter what and to tell my parents not to feel intimidated. To take the $ b/c they earned it. And that the night before that the president said let's make a fundraiser position and offer it to me b/c I'm so good at it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Confused

Ok...cut most of it to shorten it lol. But Callie, I don't envy your position but after reading your post I feel like you have already made your decision and just want some re-assurance. I would go with the second option. It is NOT your fault if it was not clearly communicated to you and you and the parents should not suffer for that.

Wow, I don't envy your position. Option one is playing it safe with the President of the Board. Option 2 is making sure you follow through on your promise. $20.00 is not alot considering the uniforms are 400.00 (which is CRAZY). Maybe it will be easier to make your decision after you see the amount of the check. I hope it's enough to pay everyone and still have alot left over for the banquet. Good luck!

Seriously, from a legal standpoint I'd recomment signing the check over and let the other parents grow there own backbones. SERIOUSLY do you want to be on the front page of a newspaper over this? It sounds like a small matter, and like you have some control, but in reality it is not your money,it is the collective money for a group, even if it is in your name you legally have no right to the money or how it is used. That is a matter for the board to deal with. I was the vp of a organization, and I am the leader of a girl scout troop, and in both those capacities, if I did what you are contemplating I could get into legal trouble for real.

Sorry about the situation you are in. I'd hate to see you get into trouble. Sadly just because you don't have a set a rules does not mean there are not a set a rules, government regulated rules(local, state, and sometimes federal) for all groups that fund raise.

I don't envy your position. While option number 2 sounds like the right thing to do I would in no way involve my personal checking with this matter. Even if you make copies of everything and document what you do someone will find a way to slant it against you. Sadly it sounds like a lose-lose situation with there being no option where everyone is happy. Frown

I would maybe type up a letter where you list all the funds raised and how much each parent should be getting and be sure the parents get that list. Then it's between them and the board. If they can't speak up for themselves then it's their problem.

You have a good point. Callie, I would sign the check over. The parents know by now that it isn't your fault this has happened. If the board doesn't do right by the parents, they may just find themselves in a bind next time they need volunteers...

Mine did. I had BOGO for Covergirl, all same price but different flavors, BOGO Rimmel, BOGO gum and all autodeducted the right prices. Unless I had same number of Q and item then the last Q ask for price. When I had 5 items and 4 Q all autodeducted.
