Still no word on who will replace Rosberg. As it stands today, there are four drivers positions that haven't been announced yet but two of those are for Manor. So really there are only 2 drivers seats to be filled, the one for Mercedes and one for Sauber.

Manor's Formula One future in doubt after company enters administration

Team failed to secure fresh investment ahead of 2017 season, which begins in late March

*snip*

"During recent months, the senior management team have worked tirelessly to bring new investment to the team to secure its long-term future, but regrettably have been unable to do so within the time available."

Manor Grand Prix Racing [irishtimes.com] Ltd – the sister company of Manor's parent company Just Racing Services [irishtimes.com] Limited, which holds the rights to compete in F1 – is not in administration. In the final 2016 constructors' standings, Manor finished in last place with one point.

German driver Pascal Wehrlein [irishtimes.com] scored that solitary point at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas will line up alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2017 after Williams agreed to release the Finn from his contract. Bottas' place at Williams will be taken by Felipe Massa, who is to come out of retirement to re-join the team on a one-year deal.

*snip*

On lining up alongside three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, Bottas added: "I think with Lewis we are going to be a strong pair together. I really respect him as a driver and a person.

"I'm sure we are going to close, and we're going to be both pushing each forward. I'm sure we can work as a team."

*snip*

The announcement that Massa will come out of retirement to replace Bottas, which came on the same day as Mercedes protege Pascal Wehrlein was confirmed at Sauber [formula1.com], means the Brazilian will race for Williams for a fourth consecutive season.

"Firstly, I am very happy to have an opportunity to return to Williams," said the 35-year-old, who will partner teenage rookie Lance Stroll this season.

"I always intended to race somewhere in 2017, but Williams is a team close to my heart and I have respect for everything it is trying to achieve. Valtteri has a great opportunity, given the turn of events over the winter, and I wish him all the best at Mercedes.

Oh and in case anyone missed this last week, Paddy Lowe is on gardening leave as he moves from Mercedes to Williams.

LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Formula One's new owner Liberty Media is still hoping that competing teams will buy a stake in the sport once a takeover is completed and will reserve $400 million of shares for them, it said on Thursday.

"We think it's important to offer the teams the chance to invest in F1 and further align our interests," said Greg Maffei, Liberty's president and Chief Executive, in a statement.

"We look forward to working with the teams to increase the appeal of this iconic sport and enhance the F1 business."

Formula One chairman Chase Carey said in the same statement that several teams had expressed interest in investing in the sport.

German publication Auto Motor und Sport said however that leading teams, who met this week in Geneva, had "little interest" in buying shares without voting rights that they would be obliged to hold for at least 10 years.

"Without influence on the future direction and marketing of Formula One, buying shares is not very attractive for us," it quoted one unnamed representative of a top team as saying.

This is interesting, I knew they avoided paying a huge amount of taxes but didn't know the details.

Formula One pulled a fast one on the US taxman – and it's all perfectly legal

Liberty Media, the new owner of motor racing's premier series, has set up a tax-efficient structure that takes profits by way of the Cayman Islands and Delaware

According to its latest financial statements, Delta Topco generated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) of $463.6m on $1.7bn of revenue in 2015. Delta Topco has been owned by the private equity firm CVC since 2006 and over that time it has made more than $5bn of Ebitda. Yet it paid just $122.9m of tax thanks to a clever avoidance scheme. According to senior advisers working with Liberty it is planning to repeat that scheme in the United States.

Delta Topco's revenue comes from four main sources – fees from race organizers, broadcasters and sponsors as well as the sale of corporate hospitality tickets. The vast majority of this is received by the company's subsidiaries in Britain where corporation tax comes to 20%.

However, filings show that F1's tax rate was actually equivalent to just 3.3% over the past decade and it only paid $6.5m in 2015. It is driven by a clever, but perfectly legal, trick under F1's hood.

The penny just dropped with Bernie. This is an interesting read that tells what the new bosses think is wrong with F1 in general and what they are going to focus on.

*snip*

"The problems are across the board," he told The Telegraph. "We're not marketing the sport, we're not enabling fans to connect with it on the platforms that are available today, our sponsorship relations are one-dimensional, the events feel old, the hospitality feels as if it's at least 15 years old.

"There's a transparency to what we are doing, there's a context in which decisions are being made. It's not a case of everybody playing a game of poker, trying to bluff each other. At the moment, it's not the way it should be if you want a business to be run well."

DH is watching P1, the cars look and sound great, except for the weird little T Wing sticking up in the air. They lowered the wing so they put this T Wing up high to create more downforce? Huh

Can't wait for the race on Sunday! Whee

They opened up the regs, so people found loop holes nod Braun won his manufacturer's championship by being ahead of everyone else for long enough that way, we'll see if anybody can pull that off this year with the changes, but I doubt it.

The new cars are fast Bigeye look to be setting new lap records, even faster than the monster cars of the early 2000s Hide

I'm actually not sure how i feel about the new wider rear tires - it feels a bit early 90's to me, like looking at those lambos of that era with the ridiculously wide rear tires, it just seems dated, even if it is making the cars faster.

p.s. Jealous of your ability to watch at a fairly reasonable time Saturday night, one of the few races where being on the west coast actually works out laugh out loud

You're forgetting that I'm an old fart now. Not sure if we'll be able to stay awake for the race. Which reminds me, I need to renew my AARP membership. laugh out loud

BTW, the pre-race show is split up from the race itself this year, so you might need to set your DVR to record the pre-race show. Not sure if this is NBC's doing or Comcast so you might see it as one show like they did last year. Dontknow

yeah, I see in the spectrum guide a 30 minute preshow, then the race starts 30 minutes before the race. I'm assuming the full hour is pre-race coverage from NBCSN, maybe I'll just set my DVR to start recording 30 minutes early Scratchchin

This is... interesting. When Perez gets another driving penalty that will mean a 10 place grid penalty since he already has 1 driving penalty and the anthem penalty.

Quote :
SHANGHAI (REUTERS) - Australian Daniel Ricciardo and Mexico's Sergio Perez have become the first Formula One drivers to be reprimanded under a new rule requiring timely attendance at the pre-race national anthem ceremony.

Ricciardo (Red Bull) and Perez (Force India) drivers failed to join the rest in standing at the front of the grid 14 minutes before the start of the formation lap at Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

The sanctions, while nothing to do with actions on the track, could have championship ramifications with three reprimands in a season triggering an automatic 10-place grid penalty for the next race.

The penalty is only imposed, however, if at least two of the three reprimands were imposed for a driving infringement.

It was announced a few days ago that Alonso is going to skip Monaco to race in the Indy 500. McLaren has already agreed to this and Button is going to take Alonso's spot at Monaco as a one off.

Now Red Bull's Christian Horner has weighed in on the whole thing, it's kind of funny.

Quote :
MANAMA (AFP) - Red Bull team chief Christian Horner described his McLaren counterpart Zak Brown as "barking mad" on Friday (April 14) for agreeing to allow Fernando Alonso to miss the Monaco Grand Prix and race in the Indianapolis 500.

Sitting alongside the American at a scheduled news conference for team principals ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, Horner launched a savage appraisal of his rivals' decision.

"It is a difficult one for Fernando as he is having a tough time," said Horner.

"And Zak has this problem. He has a depressed driver on his hands and he is trying to keep him motivated.

"He has come up with this idea to send him to Indianapolis, but he must be barking mad. It is the nuttiest race I have ever seen.

"No testing. He is just going to jump in the car. Turn One is a proper turn as well - it is not easy flat all the way around. So, personally, I think he needs to see a psychiatrist."

Long Beach Considering Hosting Formula One Race

The Grand Prix of Long Beach has been an annual tradition of the coastal California city since 1975, when a Formula 5000 race was run on a temporary street circuit. Starting in the United States's bicentennial year of 1976, the Long Beach venue held Formula One world championship events, and the race was named the United States Grand Prix West in contrast to the New York event held at Watkins Glen. Between 1975 and 1983, the race was a Formula One event; in 1984, however,it changed to CART, and later, IndyCar.

Now, Long Beach City Council is investigating a return to hosting Formula One over IndyCar, even though the contract to host IndyCar is locked in through 2018. According to Long Beach news outlet Gazettes [gazettes.com], a $150,000 payment has been approved to KPMG Corporate Finance, LLC, a consulting firm that will advise the city in regards to its wish to bring Formula One back.
