Texans - question for you

In April DW and I are planning on taking the kids to see her brother, who is just getting out of the AF and has decided to stay in San Antonio (Lackland).

The week before she has a conference in Houston, paid for by school (she's a HS teacher). This is good because it will save us her airfare. That said, the IL's are also going, so it's likely we will take the same flights to and from SAT.

So if DW is in Houston and has flights in/out of IAH (the way she's reimbursed it has to be this way), would it be better for the whole crew to fly into/out of IAH - OR -try to find her a way back from SAT to IAH at the end of the trip and the rest of us fly into/out of SAT?

It looks like a ~ 3 hour drive (is that so?). I guess a one way car rental would do.

So the real question is, what is saving the cost of flight worth? Traffic in Houston is horrific, San Antonio isnt terrible but it not great either. That 3 hours drive is pretty boring as well. Plus you are really losing 6 hours total if you do that. If yall opt for the drive back to Houston for her return flight, why not just fly into SA and have everyone fly out of IAH?

Well it would have to be two one way car rentals for her but doing that would probably be the simplest way. If you have you, DW, the kids and the in-laws plus everyone's luggage, a rental car will be crowded. You'd probably have to get a bigger rental each way and that would cost a lot more.

The other option is to have her fly, don't think it would cost very much, Houston to San Antonio used to be a pretty cheap flight, probably still is cheap. Check the budget airlines, Southwest is really good but book it now, as the prices will only go up.
