Tello Data Sale - May Be Helpful For Former Ringplus Phones $6 per month YMMV Ends Feb 12th

This is not my idea, give credit to tennis8363 (A Slickdeal Rockstar)

It has been suggested that you can make use of your old Ringplus phones by purchasing a plan from Tello :https://tello.com/buy/custom_plans

You have to choose a plan over $5 dollars so you can select 200 texts for $2 and 200 MB of data for $4. This is a little tricky, in small print Tello is offering unlimited data at a very slow speed if you buy any data package. It has been reported the slow speed will work with Google Voice. Therefore, you will be able to install Hangouts and use your old Ringplus phone to make unlimited calls for $6 per month. Please edit the Wiki as needed to help former Ringplus users. To keep this thread from being locked please do not make personal comments.

It is also recommended to only choose unlimited services with Tello. To use this strategy choose unlimited text for $3 and 200 MB of data for $4. You should then contact Tello to make sure all voice service is cancelled. Likewise, you could choose 500 MB of data for $8, and then contact Tello to turn off all voice and text.

If you want to have no surprises charges, only select unlimited services and turn off everything else.

The Tello sale on Data is set to end on February 12th

NOW RingPlus has failed us. I disputed at AMEX for $120 Membership+ fee which was paid just two months ago. Just received reply from AMEX that decision is in favor or me because Ring+ didn't respond to the message AMEX sent to them. I suggest everybody trying this. Ring+ wouldn't have the resource to respond to all inquiries. -- by caiyueyuan

For those wondering if the promo codes are forever or the first month:

Instead of a welcome party, you get 30% OFF
Tello comes to the rescue with a friendly and easy porting process and once RingPlus customers are up and running with Tello, they get 30% off when they first order a phone plan. All they need to do is use the coupon code RINGPLUS on the checkout page and place the order until February 12. Just imagine how paying 30% less on your phone bill looks like…

The discount is valid for the first month with Tello.

HOW TO ACTIVATE YOUR DEVICE:
We kindly ask you to try restarting the device so the network can be updated on the telephone. If the network is not recognised successfully please follow the activation steps mentioned below:

- Connect to a Wi-Fi network
- Restart your phone
- Within 2-3 minutes the phone should start a Hands Free Activation on its own
- When the activation completes, your phone is ready for use.

If your phone does not activate, try the steps below, in order, and test your services after each step.

1. Carrier Reset:

- Make sure Roaming is off (go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options -> Roaming Off)
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network
- Go to dial pad as though you're about to dial a phone number
- Enter # # 25327 #
-Tap Call
- A "Reset Subscriber Settings" message will appear - tap OK
Wait 5-10 seconds; the signal notification will display "Searching" on the top left of the screen
When the phone shows a signal again, the phone is ready to use

2. Profile and PRL Update:

- Connect to a Wi-Fi network
- Tap the phone app
- Dial # # 873283 #
- Tap Call
- Starting Service Update message will appear - tap OK
- If update is successful Service Update Complete message will appear after about a minute - tap OK.

If the update is not successful or you get a "Service Update Failed" message, make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and try again.

IF DATA IS STILL NOT WORKING AFTER STEP 1,2 -- do the following:

May be this will help those having problem with cellular data.
I ported 2 MOTO G4 to Tello. Call/text worked but can't get cellular data. This is after trying carrier reset/PRL update/Device config update multiple times. Called customer support and they have no clue and they recommended factory reset. DON'T DO IT.
Here is what fixed it for me:
1) Install ChangeAPN app from Google store
2) Open ChangeAPN and click the "option" ( the 3 vertical dots) in the upper right hand corners.
3) click "reset to default"
4) exit the app
5) perform carrier reset (note: need to use the *#*#72786#*#* as noted by someone previously)
6) after the phone rebooted, perform PRL/Device config update.

That's it and you should have LTE data.

Tello's Data Plan Policy

"Enjoy 4G LTE: unlimited data usage, speed throttled down to 64kbps once you use up your plan's data amount." If you sign up for any data plan you will be automatically enrolled in the 2G unlimited plan"

crabald

"If your data speed is throttled, it means your internet speed is limited to just 64kbps and tethering automatically disabled.
"Throttling is automatically enabled when:
your data plan balance runs out, OR
your data plan balance runs out and your Pay As You Go credit falls below $0.50

You can still benefit from 4G LTE speed if you renew your data plan, upgrade to a new plan with a higher data balance or top up your Pay As You Go balance."

"Another alternative:
Someone on R+ forums said they went with Tello's cheapest plan ($6/mo, 200 txt & MB), installed TextNow app for free VoIP & txt, and took advantage of Tello's free unlimited 64kbps data once initial allotment runs out to get unlimited everything - claimed TextNow VoIP was "crystal clear" even when throttled. If so, sounds like a good idea for limited data needs - I'd spend the extra dollar for 100 real cell mins instead of texts in case of internet problems, though."

nick314

"Port your RingPlus number to Google Voice instead of Tello.

This will let you have unlimited texting and MMS as well, as SMS/MMS through Google Voice/Hangouts will use your data connection. You will also permanently own your number this way."

DAC21

"I emailed their CS with questions about porting over from R+ and they got back to me in less than 45 min, you can call as well with your question.

1-866-377-0294 or 1-678-306-1436"

To bring your phone over to Tello:

go to tello.com and hover over 'SHOP' in top header, then click on 'Bring Your Own Phone' and follow instructions from there. My phone and sim were both good to use with Tello, so zero cost for that.

tennis8363

"I posted it over in the RP thread. Of course, not my original idea, got it from someone on the RP forums.

He said that there have been no issues with throttled data and G Voice.

Worst case, it doesn't work and you are out 6 bucks and looking for another cell plan."

"Likely that something will happen with Ring +.

To make it easier to move if/when that happens I went to the Ring+ dashboard.

Click on each line, that you can bring up info on the individual device. Go to the manage device tab. On the left side there are all kinds of info on the device (phone #, ESN, MSL) Do a cut/copy ( & later paste) of this whole paragraph/box. Then paste it in a word doc or e mail. Then back arrow a page & go to the tab "Port in / Out"

Upper right side has a link labeled "Port out Info". Click on this & again cut/copy of all this info . Paste into the doc - email.

If I have to move, at this time I'm thinking Tello. This way I can have all the info ready, won't have to worry if the Ring plus site goes down or gets wacky. I can just cut/paste the info to a new Tello account"

The end may be coming. It was a fun ride.

Ringplus may win their legal case next week, so YMMV in what you decide to do before the ship sinks.

FYI, I requested to port in to Tello Sunday evening. I got the email that it might have some delay because of lots of requests. I just got confirmation that number was ported in less than 24 hours.

Has anyone got this email from RingPlus?!! So it looks like they're trying to move us to some other MVNO and your top balance would go with it. Unfortunately those of us who have already initiated the port out process are sh*t out of luck and we will lose our top up balance, which pisses me off because I had $35 left with them.

Oops forgot to post the email:

RingPlus, Important Information about Your Service: Hold Off on Porting, RingPlus Members Likely Have a New Home
IMPORTANT information about
your phone service
IMPORTANT NOTICE

ABOUT YOUR SERVICE

Dear Members,

RingPlus is currently in discussions with other MVNOs (wireless carriers) that are ready to take over your service on their plans. Your Top Up balance will be credited by the other MVNO as a courtesy. Additional benefits will likely be available. If you port out now, you will lose your top up balance. You will be informed on how the switch will be completed as well as the information about the carrier later today. If you are interested in participating in the process, please do not initiate a port at this time. RingPlus and the other MVNO will work out a transition process, and infom you of the details very soon. (Unfortuantely, I you have already initiated or completed a port out, you will not be able to participate in this process.)

Best regards,
RingPlus

This should probably go under deal talk instead of hot deals since it's tello's normal pricing.

If I select a plan with no texts, when someone sends a text to my number will I be charged extra or will it simply not go through at all?

If you add credit to your account, you'll pay the pay-go rate: $0.03/min, $0.02/MB, $0.01/text.

The best plan if you don't use a lot of min/text is to just buy data, $8/500mb

Thanks, I'm actually considering it for my mother. She doesn't need any data or texts only voice minutes. Any other providers comparable or cheaper for 200-400 minutes per month?

Tello is probably the cheapest out there, but if you want a different network Ting, USMobile, or Tracfone have similar plans.

Technically it is not, as Data is on sale for another eight days for plans with 2gb or more. This looks like a winner for me, even more so If they allow you to buy 1gb for $11 and then pay as you go for voice and texts. Current usage for those two services would put me at about a $13 a month bill. That is even better than Mint Sim let alone not having to pay upfront from between 3 and 12 months and have to keep buying a new SIM when your contract is up. My understanding is that Tello prices includes fees and comes with voicemail.

There's FreedomPop free plan:

100% Free Basic Plan - 500 texts, 200 minutes, and 500MB each month

Just buy their SIM. Runs on AT&T network.
