Lenovo has the Thinkpad E570 laptop for $424.78 with a 1920x1080 IPS display, if you follow the instructions below. Shipping is free. This is the best quality display you will get in 15.6" laptop under $450.

This deal focuses on the base model + display upgrade as a general-use sub-$450 laptop with a great display. I discuss the upgrade options, but the deal is not focused on those. Please save your downvotes if it is only a higher configuration that you consider to be a poor deal. Thanks.

  • Under Display select 15.6 FHD(1920x1080) IPS Non-Touch. It is not recommended to purchase this laptop with the default HD(1366x768) TN option. Low 1366x768 resolution limits how much you can fit onscreen, and the 1366x768 panel also provides very poor contrast and overall picture quality. The "screen realestate" on the 1920x1080 IPS display is less limiting, and it is also a much better quality panel with wide viewing angles and proper reproduction of dark colors. Buying the E570 is not only about how good the 1920x1080 IPS display is for the price, it is also about avoiding some of the very poor displays that are out there. The availability of the 1920x1080 IPS display is a big part of what makes it such a good value in the first place, and my recommendation for this model only stands if you are buying it in a configuration that includes the good display.
  • Optional: Select a Memory upgrade. Through the current discount, the prices (8GB for +$30.15 or 16GB for +$60.30) are lower than if you were to perform them yourself after-market. 8GB is good, however use cases that require 16GB likely also depend on other specs to be better than what this laptop offers, so you likely will not need 16GB.
  • Optional: Under Hard Drive select None. This will automatically select the dedicated 256GB SSD for a net additional $83.75 after discounts.
  • Optional: Under Processor select Core i7-7500U comes with NVIDIA Geforce GTX950M for an additional $157.45. This will turn the laptop into a decent mid-level gaming option for the price. This is the DDR5 version of the 950M, so it will be better for games than the DDR3 version in that is used in other laptops.

If your budget is limited, it is recommended to prioritize the 1920x1080 IPS display and, if you need it, the GTX 950M. The RAM and SSD upgrades can be performed after-market at a later date, whereas the display may be difficult to and the GPU cannot be. And i3-7100U vs i5-7200U likely will not matter if you are buying the laptop for basic use.

Note: The upgrade prices of the configuration options themselves are discounted. What appears to be a +$45 RAM upgrade affects the actual final price by only +$30.15.

Looks like the only way to get he 950m is going with the i7, adding other options to make this decent (16GB ram for example) brings the price up to a rapey $739.68, no thanks.

It either forces to go with regular hd (price around $650) or pick 256GB SSD as secondary which jumps the price above $700. It used to be a great deal when bug on lenovo site allowed to remove primary hard drive and added the secondary ssd free of charge.

For most use I don't think you will need 16GB RAM. 1920x1080 IPS + 950M + 8GB is $612 which is slightly cheaper than the Lenovo IdeaPad 700 [amazon.com] (currently $624), which has the same kind of display, same amount of memory, also only a HDD (albeit a bigger one), and the lower DDR3 version of the GT 950M. If your priority is game performance, with a good display, this laptop will be the better choice.

But my original motivation for posting the deal was primarily to highlight the base model plus the display upgrade as currently the cheapest basic-use laptop with this level of display. I have edited my post to clarify that.

Strange. I'm seeing that it does allow you to remove the primary drive, and purchase only with the SSD.

I bought this with an I7u and 16gb memory last time. Nice laptop but rather heavy. The black matte finish shows every fingerprint. I bought mine without a hdd and bought a wd black 1tb hdd for like $60. Very easy to access memory slots and drive bay.

I bought a fully loaded one on black friday. I promptly returned it. The build quality was not worthy of the thinkpad name. Not even close to the build quality of my T450 or my T460.
