AT&T ZTE Mobley Unlimited 4G LTE $20 per month, like a Hotspot

There's a lot of scattered information about this deal. Let's consolidate everything into one thread so we can better share advice and information about the deal.

I don't take credit for any of this information, I'm just referencing others. I just want to have an easy to find place with up to date concise information in a WIKI format so more people can get this and keep it going. Unfortunately, Howard Forums don't have a WIKI and it is hard to get through so many posts to find some answers.

For those that don't know the deal, basically, you can get a Hotspot type of device for $100 or less and with a couple of simple modifications, you can get fast unlimited 4G data for about $20 per month. The device is supposed to be for cars, but with a power supply, you can use it anywhere, including a source for your home Internet. Many have reported that you can even take the SIM out and use it in the Super fast unite explore Hotspot for speeds up to 150mbps

It does take some work. You have to get on the $20 unlimited standalone plan by either calling AT&T or going into a best buy location.

Ebay best buy store, $100, didn't charge me tax, but had to pay $25 activation for best buy to activate it
http://www.ebay.com/itm/322460240268

You can also get it directly from AT&T for free, but need a 2 year contract, and they charge $45 activation fee, and you have to pay tax.
https://www.att.com/devices/zte/m...6rxvWLZ7WQ

Step 2 is to get the adapter that will allow it to work in your home. You can either make one yourself or pay a high price for an already modified charger.

Here is some basic information.

UPDATE:
Now you can order the $20 plan directly from AT&T website without jumping through hoops. You have to pay tax and $45 activation, but device is free with 2 year contract. So I guess no more YMMV

THERE IS A HARD CREDIT CHECK, NO MATTER WHAT

HOW TO COMBINE MOBLEY WITH HOME INTERNET TO INCREASE SPEEDS:

You can add the device to your home internet to increase your overall speed and have a backup in case your home internet goes out. For example, if your home internet has 50/5 and your device gets 20/10, you can add them together to get 70/15.

I have found that the easiest way to do this is to get an AT&T Homebase unit and pop your SIM in it. You need to change the APN settings for it to work.
You will need a TP Link Load balance router. You can find it on ebay for cheaper, but here is the Amazon link:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-In...nce+router

Pre-steps:
1. Buy Load balance router
2. have a way to connect mobley to the TP Link load balance router via ethernet
a.connect by micro USB port
b. connect by getting a home base unit
3. easiest way is to make sure the IP addresses don't interfere. (for example, set your home router at 192.168.1.1, your mobley/home base to 192.168.0.1, your TP link to 192.168.2.1) ie the second to last space, the number needs to be different, to give you the option of connecting to one or the other without mixing

Set up:
1. connect home internet via ethernet cable to TP link (port 1 or 2)
2. connect mobley/home base to TP link (the next port)
3. connect your router to the 3rd/4th/5th ports
4. log into TP link, admin, admin
5. under Network, then WAN, check 2
6. under advanced, then load balance, uncheck everything
7. under advanced, then traffic control, make sure "Disable Bandwidth Control" is checked
8. Run speed test to make sure it is adding the bandwidth
9. you might have to turn all your devices off and then on. I'll try to post the link to the settings if above is not clear

You can use this device to put your SIM in and get basically a router without needing modifications:

I bought one of the homebases and it worked provided you change the APN settings.... something you likely didnt do.

Buy this, and cut off the small barrel plug connector end.

Buy this ODB Female pigtail connector and Wire Red from USB cable above to pin 16 on ODB and Black to pin 4 on ODB. Cut off all the other wires so they don't get in the way or short out. Heat shrink or wrap electrical tape around the splice and you're good to go for $20

FAQ:

How I built a power adapter for cheaper than $16 that is better than the 40$ ones
The $40 ones on ebay and Amazon have some terrible build quality. If you do like I did, you can have mildly better build quality and $24 more dollars in your pocket (assuming you have a spare 12V power adapter or USB charging port available currently.

$7Bought this OBDII female plug (16 Pin J1962 OBD2 OBDII Female Connector Kit with Hardware DIY)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-Pin-J1...SwZVlXn~h9

$1Get this pair of DC Power adapter connectors (Pair of DC Power Terminal Plug Adapter Connector 2.1mm for CCTV wholesale lots)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pair-of-D...S-5GRnXfNA

$8Get this USB 5v to 12v converter cable (USB DC 5V to 12V Step up Converter Power Supply Charge Cable DC 2.1x5.5mm Jack)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-DC-5V...Swu4BVsmF8

I wired pins 4 and 5 (they are labeled) to ground, and pin 16 to positive/power. If you trim the rubber neck around the power terminal or dremel/cut the opening in the OBD female connector then you can put the power plug inside the OBD connector and have the power plug protrude out the back of it. Its not a high voltage current, and if you can solder then even better. If not then you just crimp the wires from the pins and it should work fine. Use the USB 5v to 12v cable to power the adapter and since its power requirements are tiny then nearly any USB port should work to power it.
If you decide not to use barrel adapters and to wire 5/12 converter cable directly(the one mentioned in the link above), cut the cable at the barrel adapter, strip the wires, black wire is ground (you can check continuity to the outside metal part of the usb connector) connect to pins 4 and 5, red wire is the power, connect to pin 16.

I take no responsibility for damages caused by doing as I did and realize some people really shouldn't be working with or even using electricity.

If you are wanting to use the Mobley outside the car but dont' want to swap the SIM into some other device
Pop the small cover off the side of the Mobley which reveals a micro USB port. Use a power adapter to power your device via OBD, and connect via micro usb the Mobley to a Merlin, Asus, or other USB 3G compatible router (Such as the TMobile branded one from a few months ago)
Then follow the directions from here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showt...bly-others!

Now you can use the device with more than 5 connected users, inside the house and still easily pull it out and use it in the car.

Only draw back that I have is the device will power off after a couple of hours of inactivity or idle and you have to power cycle it. You CAN change the settings on the device (using IE not chrome to access the admin console) and disable the power save/battery saver features. If you do this, know that the setting stays when you put it back into your car and if you leave it plugged in there you risk draining your cars battery.

Any guesses as to whether AT&T will shut this down or grandfather users in?

There are also mentions of deprioritization after 22 GB or so in the ATT fine print, but in practice not.

Hopefully this thread doesn't grow too large since that's how most carriers or retailers find out about their own loopholes.

I have the same fears. I first posted it under deal talk thinking less exposure, but it flagged it as expired, so I out it here instead.

It is easier with an unlimited plan, but you don't need any other plans with them. This can be a stand alone plan by itself

Well it shouldn't have been posted here at all then. slickdeals people love to exploit the system and find every loophole imaginable. Now it'll probably spread like wildfire and due to rampant abuse will get shut down for everyone.

The op should have known this already, being that he/she joined way back in 2006.

it's only $20 if you an account with att already. it's $40 for a new standalone account. I'm going into bestbuy tomorrow to confirm but if that's the case then it's not worth it imo.

and there is talk about it getting terminated after 7/7/17 so there's a risk of losing it.

If you read the link or forum posts, it's now $20 per month even if you don't have an existing at&t account.

So I order online at ebay to pick up at local store. And I go to. Eat buy store to pick it up and let them activate to unlimited plan as a new user? Pay $20 per month and can cancel any time, is it right? Thanks
