Pretty much or if you have a smart eco system you can tell it to turn on off lights etc.... I have the echo and dot and I barely even use them yea it was cool for a month then got old quick

I was on the fence too, but it seems like you don't need the dot if you have speakers, soundbar, etc in the room you're putting Alexa in. I have one.. so I just ended up getting two dots.

I do this....use my phone's hotspot and enjoy Alexa in the car with an Echo Dot. Considering the dot was only $30 off craigslist, well worth it. Just plugs into my Aux jack and uses the lighter plug...
