I understand your concern. I paired the companion pass up with Chase's Ultimate Rewards program. The Companion Pass saves you money if you planned to pay out of pocket anyways. It won't save you any...

Same here. Although having extra year/extra points may actually be a better deal. But a single purchase vs $4000 spend is real nice. They have been pulling out all the stops for CA of late....
