It makes perfect sense. ATT gives you $700 credit only to lock you down with them for 2 years. If you pay off the phone early, you lose the remaining credit, plain and simple.

From my reading once the credit start (which can take up to 3 months) you can pay off the "buy one" phone no problem.
But you can not pay off the "get one free" phone unless you want the credits...
