A microwave would not be wise to run off this unit nor do I think it would work given the wattage pull from the microwave. It sounds like you're better off buying a power generator than trying to use...

I believe the manual says there will be an alarm and overload warning where the unit has to be reset.
The manual also says don't plug in a vacuum cleaner, printer or other high drawing devices.

I never understood the ratings on these things. 1500VA should supply a 100W load for something like 15 hours, right? But everyone is always talking about 20-30min run times? I'm confused.

As long as the machine doesnt draw more than 900W.
Take a look at the things you are going to plug into the battery back up side of the UPS. You can use a Kill-a-watt meter to determine power draw...
