Licenses shift with different companies so i don't know if there is a real solution besides piracy. You can't have only ONE company with all the licenses, that's a monopoly and nobody likes those...

Maintenance is a PITA. Servers cost money. Storing it locally on a hard drive costs money. Let's not forget planned obsolescence and reselling box sets. Too many variables and capitalism

Own is kind of misleading for *any* digital video. It's more like "watch on their platform until their licence expires then it sucks to be you" There are enough horror stories online about this

I’ve always been pretty anti piracy, but I’ve experienced these horror stories. It seems like there’s no legitimate way to own digital movies. Pushes me toward piracy.

I would hesitate to buy movies from Microsoft right now. You can't watch the movies anywhere beside Windows/ Xbox devices, and there may be some chance Microsoft will kill the service leaving you...
