I'd consider them like most new cell phones, they can survive a brief immersion but I doubt they'd last long under water unless you modified them. They use a straight cut thread on the battery lid...

Have one of these setup with smartthings via pistons...it will turn off my ac if ac start to leak. I do a monthly test to make sure everything is working. So far so good.

I suppose you could use it for either but I don't know how long it would last outside. It mainly works to detect water on the floor or other flat surface it's sitting on.

They do if you have a shutoff and use the "LEAK" feature of smartthings. That said I haven't had any problems with these once they were "settled" in.
