Mine have never been a regular glossy photo as it sounds above. This is a more durable gloss finish doesn't pick up fingerprints.

There is no coating to cover it, its just a glossy photo stuck onto the wood. You can stick your fingernail under the edge and peel it up if you try, there is nothing sealing it to the wood.
