I've been a DM for about a year and a half and I rarely open my monster manual. It certainly helps when needed, but if you have a computer, you can get all the same stats easily online.

If you are a DM I would highly recommend the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's guide. As counter-intuitive as it sounds, you could probably wing-it without the Dungeon...
