Problem with the remotes that have headphone jacks is you can not listen thru the roku app on your phone. The remote has pretty bad sound quality. You get very good sound quality through your phone.

I have a first gen and I've had no problems with it. Sounds like you need to do factory reset on it. Some times OS updates make it unstable. A reset should fix it. The new firestick are much faster...
