Here's a source for you. I had 7970, then crossfired with a 280x later on. Didn't have any problems with the drivers at all (some games aren't crossfire/SLI friendly, but that's a different matter)....

It's ever so slightly ahead on average. I guess you're right with nvidia gimping on so many titles. 1060 will use less power, but if you're not gonna OC, then you can seriously undervolt a 580....
