I'd kill PoE on the switch ports you're trying to trace, and maybe grab something that takes PoE that you don't care about, like a cheap grandstream phone or an old Cisco WAP.

It can test long network runs just fine. The probe and the emitter both have RJ45 jacks that you plug into each end of the run, and then it works like a standard network tester.
