No, it is not. MyBook has forced hardware encryption. What this means is that if the enclosure fails (but not the drive), you cannot simply remove the drive and put it in a new enclosure/use it...

It can be, be careful though because if you need to RMA it, WD will have the drive marked as external and potentially not warranty a tampered with drive.

Yeah its better to just buy these and chuck the drives from inside as opposed to buying them loose you save $30 AND you get an enclosure you can use for another western digital hard drive

For those wondering hard drive inside is a blue 4TB WEWD40EZRZ was easily removable but i was trying to put a different hard drive in the enclosure which is a 1 tb WD drive and while it does work...
