Yeah exactly. I used to have to push down certain veggies each day, which just allowed more oxygen into my jars, which you want to avoid. Weights let you not have to deal with checking/pushing things...

Some rocks are pourous or has cracks that'll may harbor bacteria. You wouldn't want to risk introducing an unknown bacteria into your ferment.
