Can't say I've EVER seen a 4x4 in Maple. Not only would it be CRAZY expensive but VERY hard to dry. I hope you're not comparing this wood to pine/fur.

Get a piece of .1875 lexan and bolt down in the corners. Its exactly what we use in my machine shop well .250 but it is a bit more and we need the added strength.

I agree. You can get an 8' piece of oak butcher block for about $200. Add some pine 2x4 framing/legs and leg levelers and you've got a much more sturdy and larger workbench.
