I just tried with a Verizon mobile number and it accepted it. The BB portal uses different servers, depending on your location. It could be the server that connected with the BB portal that you used...

I bought the regular G6 for $79.99. unlocked, activate with Sprint, paid online. I picked up the phone and Sprint sim card at the store. Then I called Sprint and cancelled the port.

You need to activate it on Sprint to get it for 69$. Later am sure you can move to any carriers since its unlocked by Manufacturer, so no need to ask for unlock code etc...
