3/4 or Jr. Size guitars with nylon strings. He's going to hate metal/steel strings because those hurt gentle fingers. Hohner guitars are good student guitars.

yeah I bit on the Jem Jr. Always wanted a Jem but never wanted to pay the $$$. Seems like a good deal. Just too bad you have to pay tax everywhere online these days.

I second the ukulele suggestion. I gave ukes to both my daughters where they were small. They are now 8 and 13. My 13 year old is still pretty small and still plays it as well as a very nice 3/4 size...
