no, only the main one requires ethernet connection from modem. however, you'll probably need to connect ethernet to both during initial set up to update firmware before they will pair well.

Yes, I have two of these TP-Link OnHub routers without any Google mesh routers. In fact, I believe these are ac1900 wireless while the Google mesh "discs" are ac1200.

The first one need to get ethernet cable. Everything else can be wifi. However, hard wired back haul is usually faster. Look into moca for coaxial back haul.
