I think...If all you have is $20-30 or whatever to spend, this might be an OK device for a beginner. Otherwise, for things like birdwatching, you probably are better off with a little more...

7x35, the "7" is the magnification factor, so this will give you 7x mag. the "35" is the objective size (the big lens in the front). Generally the bigger the objective lens, the better the image...

If your application can use a monocular, then the monocular is usually a better deal because there's only 1 set of optics, i.e. all your $ goes into that set.
