PCIe 4.0 interface is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0. You will just get 3.0 speeds.

it'd be a waste to put a gen 4 drive in a usb enclosure. you won't get full speeds from it. save some money and get a gen 3 drive if you're gonna go external
