Issue is, by putting undue pressure outside of the rating, you may knock it out of spec causing the torque number to become incorrect and I think THAT should worry you more than out right breaking it...

^^^^^ This, I don't know how many times I see people use the torque wrenches like breaker bars for a slight mechanical advantage. Ruins the accuracy of the torque wrench pretty quickly.

Depends on your vehicles. Some of the smaller cars have torque ratings under 100 foot pounds, but larger vehicles (trucks, some suvs) require a higher value likely closer to the 150 foot pound range....
