First, you are not using your cell carrier for GPS. Second, smartphones can display a compass using its GPS chip. But yes, an old school compass is better then using phone as a compass.

I have google maps failed a couple of times. All of a sudden it decided not to work. When I had it, the 10 year old Garmin GPS never failed. There is definitely a place for a Garmin as a backup.
