The adhesive will damage drywall when removed. If sticking to ceramic or other nonporous surface, you would just need to use something to remove any adhesive left behind after removing the tiles.

I imagine they mean to clean your surface with some sort of degreaser before installation. After that I'm sure there should be no problem with grease ruining the adhesive backing on the product.
