Not sure about down vote but I have Klein that looks exactly like this one except flashlight instead of laser (Model # NCVT-3R), very handy for "most DIYers" IMO although in some cases I don't like...

I'm a new home-owner and just bought an old house with ungrounded outlets. I'm planning on going around the house and swapping them out for GFCI outlets so I can plug in 3-prong devices. Do I need...

On the phone, the only place I saw it was in the closeup picture. On a PC, it is also listed in the description as part of several images.

If you have ungrounded outlets in an old house you most likely have 2 conductor wires (hot and neutral) for 3 prong or GFCI outlets you need 3, the 3rd being the ground wire. edit: apparently, a...

Where do you see NCVT-5A? I'm only seeing NCVT-5 in the product description on the Home Depot product page.

You're better off with this. To test which is your neutral wire (typically white wire). If there is non you can check with one lead to the metal box or ground wire. And the other to find the "hot"...

A voltage detector is pretty useful to have even for non-electricians. Most clamp-style multimiters have them built in as well, even those that are $15. If you just want a small NCV detector tool in...

There are cheaper versions out there that may or may not be as durable. I usually stick the non-contact tester in the receptacle and flip breakers until it stops beeping. It usually works for the...

Unless everything is grounded through the conduit.
Post #141396221 added 10-20-2020 10:07 AM by GP314 in Deal Talk
This is a way to do it but as with any work I would check your local electrical codes before doing anything just to be sure. And make sure the conduit does provide a good path to ground. You never...

price in title please why do we need a laser pointer with these?
Post #141392978 added 10-20-2020 8:30 AM by thanatossassin in Deal Talk
They have options with either a laser pointer or a flashlight. I, myself, own the flashlight version which is quite helpful. I could see the laser being useful when working with an apprentice.

I really am waiting for the version with the small led flashlight to show up on a deal. That’s usually what I need most as a prosumer. Frees up one hand while probing around things.

Thanks. I had read something along that line too; I may need to look up some youtube videos. So... would this tester be able to tell me if the electrical box is grounded or not?

I'm not an electrician so take this with a grain of salt, but it would work. First off, GFCI doesn't protect from surges. It protects electricity from going through you to ground. It does this...

Do not use non contact voltage testers to determine if wires "are not live." NCVT should only be used to tell you the presence of voltage. One must use a multimeter/voltmeter to determine if the...

Yeah, they'd remain ungrounded. From my research (and I'd love to hear if I misunderstood) is that swapping them with GFCI (w/o grounding) will at least reduce risk of electrical fires, even if it...

If your home has flexible metal conduit or pipe that hasn't been cut or altered to metal boxes. That should serve as a ground. Not as good as a dedicated wire though. You can check by using a tester...
