You can get a PCIe adapter that gives you M.2 nvme slots. But your mother must be able to boot from PCIe addon cards for that to work. Older motherboards might or not might have that ability.

if you Mac has an m.2 slot or can get an adapter to m.2 size, then yes, it should work. if you web search nvme ssd model# compatible with mac air, it'll yield the info you need.

Well, reads are impacted if you look at the link. It's 40% slower when it's full. It's still pretty fast and much better than write slow downs (which is 90% slower when full).
