You're buying either used cards or new old stock, either way you take a bit of a reliability hit. Best you can really do is test the cards before you deploy them.

They probably aren't fakes. The fakes are in the sizes someone might actually want today. You can get more for your money this way than what someone here would need to pay to ship it to you. Also...

A larger card with a single 1GB partition formatted appropriately (probably FAT) may also work, depending on your specific device. It worked for me a couple months ago with an old RacePak datalogger....
