Yes, you can. Both ETF's and stocks are both considered capital assets. When you sell them, the profit or loss is a capital gain or capital loss. Do make sure, you account for short term Vs long term...

Hi, say for example i bought a stock at 1000 a share. i sell it at $600 so I have a $400 loss.
i bought an ETF for 300 and it appreciated to 800, i sell it for a gain of +500S.

thankyou! i was 60% certain... but running keyword searches and reading the past couple of months when the scenario crossed my mind, could not get any direct hits on this.
