But tons of 2.99 a month for Hulu (6 months) or 4.99 for Hulu and Disney+ ( 3 months) emails … hard to trust them atm

You still get the $8 discount etc. … so instead of 2.99 it goes up to 4.99 until discount runs out
But you will cancel before then so you can sign up with the Black Friday deal

Last year they simply updated the discount so that the price was still $0.99.
I'll check mid October to see if my account page lists higher price or still shows $0.99

I cancelled my Disney Hulu max bundle today. Not because of the big jimmy Kimmel thing but just because I am tired of price hikes and more ads and crappier service frankly.
