Does it have a screw adjustment? If not you could always get a longer pedestal rod (assuming its a hydraulic lifter) . I've taken them off junked chairs and reused them. Otherwise they cost up to 30...

That looks like a great plan. I found an attachement that turns the chair into something like a drafting stool, but your plan looks much better.
